Maria Savidis has been involved with photography from a very early age. From the moment she captured the image, with a simple point and shoot camera, of her aunt holding her younger brother, she was mesmerized by the photographic process. Purchasing her first 35mm SLR camera (Minolta SRT 102) as a teenager, she later studied at Kean University under the tutelage of the accomplished and highly respected photographers Drs. Tatton and Lokuta. During this period, Maria’s black and whites were displayed in many juried art shows and galleries.
In 1983, Maria began her tenure as an educator for the Newark Public schools. Serving as an advisor for the Photography Club, she helped students develop a love, passion and skill for the medium. During this time, she also developed and managed Technology High School’s website.
Since her last large exhibition in the 1980’, the subject matter has been of a more personal nature. For example, her travels in Greece provided an opportunity to document the evolution of the country over a period of 45 years. This collection runs from a time when many people had no phone or electricity, to the present when technology became ubiquitous. |

With the advent of the Internet, her work gradually shifted towards a more digital platform while retaining a love for the luster of the silver print. In 2001, Photographybymariasavidis.com was launched. The site has recently undergone major renovations and continues to evolve as a format for sharing her photographs with a global population. From 2001-2020 her work was exclusively displayed on her website, https://photographybymariasavidis.com.
Encouraged by her family to print and exhibit her work again, Maria entered her work for consideration into juried art shows starting with “Windows for Women in 2021”
